VICE-REGAL RECEPTION
INVESTITURE HELD.. An impressive and interesting function was held at Government House, Auckland, when their Excellencies Viscount Galway and Viscountess Galway held an investiture and reception. Tall palms, banks of petunia and primulas, ferns and foliage arranged in the ballroom made a delightful ground for the investiture. Dahlias, asters and other lovely autumn flowers adorned the reception rooms, which presented a charming setting for the many beautiful frocks, and for the distinctive uniforms worn by many of the male guests. In the adjoining room supper was served, the tables being arranged with silver candelabra and bowls of delicatelytoned hydrangeas. Awnings enclosed the verandah balconies, which were carpeted for the occasion, and lighted with amber-coloured globes. Their Excellencies entered the ballroom at 8.30 p.m. and took their
places on the dais for the investiture ceremony, which was impressive in its dignity and traditional formality.
Viscountess Galway wore a gracefully draped gown of dawn-pink ripple suede with a shoulder spray of tuberoses. Her jewels were a diamond tiara and a diamond and ruby necklace, and she carried an ostrich feather fan to match the frock. Their Excellencies’ children, the Hons. Mary. Celia and Isobel Monckton and the Hon. Simon Monckton-Arundel were present, the daughters wearing soft celeste blue satin frocks with puff sleeves and cream lace Peter Pan collars.
Two Auckland women presented with honours were Mrs. W. H. Parkes and Mrs. E. A. Kidd.
