FROZEN MEAT TRADE

INCREASED EXPORTS THIS SEASON

With the exception of pork, shipments of all classes of meat exported from the Dominion during the four and a half months of the 1938-39 season to February 15, show increases when compared with those for the corresponding period of last season. Exports of chilled beef increased by 9395 quarters, frozen beef by 2492 quarters, boneless beef by 43.429 bags, mutton by 106,292 carcases and lamb by 27,775 carcases. Shipments of pork were down by 49,311 carcases. Exports of meat during the last four and a half months were: —Frozen beef, 49,217 quarters; mutton, 570,145 carcases; lamb, 2,236,906 carcases; pork, 181,426 carcases. In addition to the above quantities, 82,503 quarters of chilled beef, an increase of 9395 quarters, and 128,793 bags of boneless beef, an increase of 43,429 bags, were exported during the four and a half months to February 15. With the exception of 273 quanters for Honolulu, all the chilled beef was for Great Britain. Killing for export at all Dominion works during the four and a half months to February 15 with those for the corresponding period of last season in parentheses, were as follow: Chilled beef (qrs.), 82,262 (83,120) ; frozen beef (qrs.), 40,688 (39,678); wether mutton (carcases), 492,171 (389.881); ewe mutton (carcases), 284.489 (402,899); lamb (carcases), 5,126.296 (4,542,083); pork (porkers), 129,433 (178,785); pork (baconers). 136.382 (142,511); boneless beef (freight carcases), 176,929 (158,658); boneless bobby veal (freight carcases), 66,052 (73,161); sundries (freight carcases), 139,644 (120,680). Shipments from Australia. South America and South Africa, to the United Kingdom during the first half of February were as follow: — Australia: Carcases mutton. 44,671; carcases lamb, 153,104; quarters beef (frozen), 38.864; quarters beef (chilled), 21,348. South America: Carcases mutton, 691; carcases lamb. 60,297; quarters beef (frozen). 946 k quarters beef (chilled), 169,964. Shipments from New Zealand to the United Kingdom for the first half of February were:—Carcases mutton, 66,974; carcases lamb, 716,020; quarters beef (frozen), 6412; quarters beef (chilled), 25.205.
