GAOL FOR CONVERSION OF CAR
VEHICLE STRI CK STATIONARY TRUCK Two months’ imprisonment was imposed on Donald Cameron, alias Jac ; MacAskill, in the Magistrate's Cour’, at Wanganui yesterday, by Mr. J. I! Salmon, S.M.. for converting n motevehicle to his own use. Defendant, who is a ship’s fireman, was also sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment on a charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car. The two terms are to be served concurrently. Senior-Sergeant L. R. Capp, whnnneared for the police, said tha* the car was taken from the parking area in St. Hill Street by Cameron, who drove it to Puriri Street. other person whom he had given a ride, and thev had barely time to jump clear when Cameron crashed into the rear of the truck, damagin'both motor vehicles.
The motorist who followed Carq_eron asked the other men to detain him until he could telephone for the police. Cameron asked leave to go behind a fence and disappeared, but was subsequently arrested and taken to the Police Station. He was a ship’s fireman who had deserted a ship in Wellington six months ago. He went to Kai Iwi where he was employed on road work. . Cameron said he came to The races and had a few drinks and had no recollection of what he had done.
