NEXT PRESIDENT

UNITED STATES POLITICS TWENTY-ONE STATES NOW REPUBLICAN [By Telegraph—Presa Association—Copyright] Received Feb. 27, 11.35 p.m. WASHINGTON, Feb. 27. “Twenty-one States are now unquestionably Republican and if the party carries New York State in 1940 it will put its candidate in White House,” the Republican National Comrrlittee deciares in a statement significantly issued the day after Mr. Dewey's conviction of the former Tammany leader, Mr. James Hines. There i§ much speculation here whether the statement represents an advance move toward pressing the presidential candidacy of Mr. Dewey, who is virtually assured of the New York delegates’ unanimous support at the convention of the States’ Republicans. It is claimed that they control 221 electoral votes, 45 under the majority needed. New York, which is listed as a borderline State, has 47 votes at the convention.
