VIRGINIA LAKE RESERVE

Sir, —After some years’ absence I was delighted to see the improvements that have been made at Virginia Lake Reserve. The setting is perfect and the city gardener is to be congratulated upon the excellent use he has made of it. The reserve is a great asset to the city, of which it may well be proud. But there is one thing lacking—rowing boats. What more pleasant on a day like Sunday than to view the gardens from the water. Or, for the more athleticalljinclined to spend an hour in strenuous rowing. Rowing is a democratic sport; how delightful it would be in the safe waters and perfect surroundings of Virginia Lake. And, physical fitness week reminds us that any additional public provision for exercise will be doubly welcome. I therefore commend this suggestion for serious consideration, that the building of a boat-house on the shores of the lake and the providing of boats for the public would be a suitable commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of New Zealand, and one which would be enjoyed by everyone, be he young or old, rich or poor. "SPECTATOR."
