HEALTH CAMP

OPENING TO-DAY 30 CHILDREN EXPECTED OFFICIAL CEREMONY LATER Thirty boys and girls from various parts of the Wanganui Education Board’s district will arrive at the health camp at Gonville to-day for six weeks’ treatment. This will be the first occasion on which the new health camp has been used but an official opening will not be held until a later date, when the camp is func-

tioning properly. It is hoped that the opening ceremony will be performed by the Minister of Health and Education, the Hon. Peter Fraser. Although only 30 children will enter the camp to-day the number will be gradually increased during the next fortnight until the inmates total 50. More than 100 applications were received for admission to the camp, the children being medically examined and approved before admission. When the first 50 children have completed the six weeks’ course they will be followed by a further 50. The staff arrived at the camp last week and will receive the children when they arrive this morning. Nurse J. Livingstone, of Auckland, is camp matron and her assistant is Nurse E. P. Grey, of the Health Department, who has had experience in health camp work under Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, Director of School Hygiene. While the children are attending the camp their usual school work wifi not be neglected. This will be under the direction of two teachers appointed to the health camp staff by the Wanganui Education Board. Speaking to a “Chronicle” reporter yesterday, Mr. A. R. Donaldson, secretary of the trustees, said that the camp would appreciate the donation of a piano. Gifts of fresh vegetables and fruit, particularly lettuces, would also be appreciated, ho added.
