NEWS FROM MARTON

PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK COMBINED CHURCH SERVICE. MARTON. Feb. 27. Last evening's combined Church service in the Civic Theatre was well attended. On the stage were representatives of five denominations in Marton, the Rev. W. Raine (St. Stephen’s Church of England) acting as chairman, with him the Rev. T. H. Burton (St. Andrew’s Presbyterian), the Rev. W. B. Cuming (Methodist), Captain Elliot Major (Salvation Army) and Mr. Bishop. The choirs of the churches were assembled in the front chairs to lead the singing, but the service was not choral like that held before Christmas. The address was given by the Rev. Mr. Cuming, who spoke on the necessity of moral fitness, which he said was essential to complete physical fitness. The world to-day, he said, was like a car without a driver, and was bound to crash unless it placed itself under the control of Providence. The Rev. Mr. Raine, before the singing of the last hymn, said that the gratifying attendance was evidence that the public enjoyed combined services. Owing to the shortness of time it had not been possible to arrange the service as that for the Christmas Thanksgiving, and it was simply a coming together of the churches. He hoped it would be possible to hold another combined service for Good Friday night. During the service a quartette was rendered by Mrs. Eagle, Mrs. Cuming. Mr. Harvey and Mr. Pearce. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB. MEETING OF MARTON BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Marton V.F.C. was held on Wednesday, February 22, at 8 p.m., about 25 members being present. The chairman (Mr. Shield) reported on the judging competitions held at the Marton Show recently, which had proved quite a success, although the entries could have been larger. The points trophy donated by Mr. E. B. Gordon was won by Mr. Anderson from the Bulls Club. It was decided to hold the annual general meeting of the club on Wednesday, March 22, and as a special effort to enroll new members a gala field day is to be arranged for the afternoon of that day. It is hoped to arange an attractive programme of novel events, such as sheaf-tossing, sawing matches and tractor-driving, ect., and a good response by young farmers will be greatly appreciated. A hearty vote of appreciation was accorded the Marton A. and P. Association for their generous support at the Show, especially to the donors of prize-money for the judging competitions and also to the judges of the different classes. The remainder of the evening was devoted to short talks by members of the club, the speakers being as follows: — Mr. F. H. Smith. Ensilage. Mr. L. McLeay, the Eradication of Gorse. Mr. R. Shield. Fencing. Mr. F. L. Smith, the Layout of the Mr. J. M. Cranstone, the General Appearance of the Farm. Each member spoke for approximately 15 minutes and the subjects proved most interesting. An enthusiastic meeting closed with votes of thanks to the speakers and to the chair. ST. ANDREWS AND ST. MARTON CIVIC THEATRE DEANNA DURBIN IN "THAT CERTAIN AGE” "That Certain Age” will present Deanna as a fifteen-year-old g’.rl undergoing her first pangs of schoolgirl romance when she falls romantically in love with a man many years her senior. The plot is more comedy than any of the previous stories, but t has the same heart-interest and stirring emotional qualities which have distinguished all of her pictures. Joseph Pasternak, who has produced all of Deanna’s pictures, acted in the same capacity on "That Certain Age.” The story, an original by Hugh Herbert, was developed into a screen play by Bruce Manning.
