GARRISON BAND SECOND IN QUICKSTEP
A GRADE WON BY ST. KILDA ASHBURTON SILVER WINS B GRADE “SOME VERY GOOD PLAYING,” SAYS JUDGE ( Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 25. “Some of the playing was very fine, indeed,” said the judge. Captain H. R. Shugg, commenting on the A and B grade quickstep events, which concluded the New Zealand brass bands championship contest at Addington Showgrounds this afternoon. St. Ki Ida Municipal Band (Dunedin) won the A grade, and Ashburton Silver the B grade. “Quite a number of bands, however, neglected to give proper expression to their music,” continued Captain Shugg, “although this is always difficult in a quickstep competition. I also noticed that some drummers failed to play their parts as written. On the whole, however, the playing was quite good and the marches chosen were very good selections.” The placings were: A Grade
REASON FOR BA BA, BLACK SHEEP”
HUMOURESQUE WAS ASKED FOR BAND PRESIDENT EXPLAINS “With reference to Tuesday's selection. when the Garrison Band played ‘Ba. Ba, Black Sheep,’ the conductor (Mr. R. Francis, L.R.S.M.) explains that all Ibe bands were invited to play a short humouresque, if possible, to fill in for the entertainment of the public, because there were only four entrants in the test selection.” telegraphs Mr. G. H. Pownall, president of the Wanganui Garrison Band, from Christ church. “When the Wanganui hand found it. was the only band playing a humouresque many expected it would not play under the circumstances, but lhe band did not hesitate to keep faith with the public.” quality on Saturday. He has all the strokes of a batsman of class, but he was rather lucky when an easy catch was dropped off him. Hp was in more than two hours for his runs. Two who seemed most likely Io get runs quickly were Oldfield, of Lancashire, and Jackson, a former New South Wales player. Oldfield has a beautiful late cut, which was much appreciated, while Jackson seemed more of a hitter. Both were out to good catches. Heane, the Nottingham captain, is a left-hander with a wide variety of strokes. Hr innings was a mixture of fast and slow scoring. In which were included some forcing shots to the off and equally strong ones on lhe leg side. Indication of the rate of scoring can be seen from the fact that Canterbury made its. runs at the rate of about 80 an hour, and the visitors at less than one a minute. Canterbury Bowlers not Expensive None of the five bowlers used by Canterbury was expensive. Roberts appeared the most dangerous, especially in his earlier spells. He had to be watched carefully all the time, for his length was consistently good, and. on occasions, he was coming In sharply Mulcock was. as usual, hard to score from. He bowled well, but did not look like getting wickets, although his swerve beat, batsmen quite often Davis, who was not used till fairly late, got two cheap wickets. The batsmen, however, did not find him as hard to play as Roberts and Mulcock. Donnelly and Cromb were rather flattered by their figures. Donnelly ke/t a good length and Cromb used flight and changes of pace to command respect. The Canterbury fielding was generally good. Hadlee shone out with brilliant dashes of 40 and 50 yards round the boundary and picking up cleanly while on the run. The crowd appreciated his work, and cn one occasion the batsmen joined in the applause. Every other player stuck to the job well. but. rather surprisingly. Kerr was not as clean as usual. Returns to the wickets were not often astray, while only one easy catch was dropped. M.C.C. AND NATAL HAMMOND WINS THE TOSS Received Feb. 26. 9 p.m. PIETERMARITZBURG, Feb. 25.
