PACIFIC ISLANDS
BRITISH OCCUPATION LINKS IN OCEAN AIR SERVICE LONDON, Feb. 24. The Colonial Minister, Mr. Malcolm MacDonald, referring to an allocation of £7500 for the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, said the money was required to pay for the cost of establishing Colonial Office officials on three islands in the Pacific hitherto regarded as of little importance, but now brought into prominence in connection with the trans-Pacific services.
Regarding Canton Island, American and British officials were at present on it in pursuance of the agreement that Britain and America hold the island in joint trust for a period of years. Discussions were proceeding concerning the details of administration and the carrying out of the trust. Mr. Arthur Henderson hoped that New Zealand was being included in the negotiations. The island might be of considerable strategic importance in the future.
