SUCCESSFUL RACE MEETING

Success attended the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s summer meeting on Saturday, for bright sunshine after a threatening morning made weather conditions ideal, there being an absence of the first day’s cold wind, and the Saturday holiday attendance was much larger than usual. Visitors were present from as far afield as New Plymouth, Wellington and N’lpier, and an enjoyable day’s racing was provided then;. The success of well-backed winners was to be expected, as form was fairly well revealed. The track was faster than on th' opening day, and the open sprint v.a: run in 1.12 2-5, the hacks being onb a second slower. Though there was actually onl. three successful favourites Whit' Gold, Le Marquis and Sternchasethe dividends were not of surprising ly large proportions, the best bt ing that attaching to the win of Pear of Asia in the Sedgebrook Juvenile and that w«s well under doubl figures. Two odds-on favourites fin ished second and returned their sup porters portion of their investments The principal event, the Earh Stakes, was won by the Philamo gelding Play On, carrying the col ours of Mr. M. Millar, of Palmerstor North, owner of a first-day winner ir Varimond. Parquet, third in thf Wanganui Cup, improved to finis; second, only a head in front of th( Wanganui-owned Entail, for whose owner, Mr. G. M. Currie, Icing nac won last year. Tiger Gain was rigid up with the minor placegetters, but the favourite, The Bigot, was agair disappointing, pulling himself tc pieces early. Laughing Lass in Form. The open sprint was won by Laughing L-ass, who had won the Flying Handicap last year and was runnerup to Aimgo on Thursday. Amigo, a little better backed than the ultimate winner, failed to concede the Laughing Prince mare 131 b., and al the finish he was in third place, the lesser dividend being returned by the smart Life Guard. The veteran Don Erma, winner ol the Adamson Steeplechase at Hawera last May, won the Fordell Hack Hurdles from the minimum mars, but it was only by a short head that he got home from the short-priced favourite, the first-day winner Lady SeeV* i. Pearl of Asia, a full sister to Icing and Tout le Monde, won the Sedge brook Juvenile Handicap, in which she got away better than on Thursday and showed plenty-of pace io beat the hot favourite. La Bru. Pearl of Asia has proved very smart on the Trent him track. The well-backed division filled the places in the Landguard Maiden, the favourite, Le Marquis, winning fron. Little Dorrit, with the improving Ruling Star third. White Gold, kept under restraint in the early stages ran home an easy winner of the Brunswick Hack Handicap, with Mischel, second favourite, returning the minor dividend. Tc Huia had no difficulty in winning the Harrison Hacs Handicap from the Wanganui-train-ed War Lap, and a short-pricea favourite in Sternchase won the hack sprint from the neglected Deficit winner of the 1936 Guineas. Totalisator Increase. With the larger attendance—the must have been 2000 people in the “outside” enclosure —the totalisator showed a continued increase throughout the afternoon, and the turnovci for the day was £26,158, as against £21,178 for the corresponding day last year. The aggregate lor the meeting was £44,424, compared witii £37,579 hast year, the increase being £6845, or nearly 20 per cent. At the conclusion of the meeting the stipendiary steward, Mr. B. N Sandilands, reported that on the first day I. Rohloff had been lined £2 for unduly looking round on Lady Stella, winner of the Westmere Hack Hurdles; that Trebor had been checked by his rider, S. Anderson, in ‘.he Matarawa Hack Handicap as lie could not go with the leaders; and that in the Campbell Handicap Amig> lay over on Airing in the early stages, causing some little trouble to the latter, but was pulled off without causing *any serious interference. Veteran’s Hurdles. Lady Stella was a hot favourite for the Fordell Hack Hurdles but was beaten on the post by the veteran Don Erma. Lady Stella again went into the lead and piloted Ohanga, Entheos and Don Erma over the initial obstacle. The favourite was going easily pacing the stands, where Entheos had dropped back to fourth place. Running down the back stretch Lady Stella was still bowling along ahead of Ohanga and Don Erma, and Uiß was the order across the top. The field closed on the leader running to the last fence and once over it Don Erma wore down the favourite tv win by a short head. Three length? back was Disturbed, well clear ol Ohanga. Entheos was last. Liinond Filly Wins. La Bru was a screaming hot fav ourite for the Sedgebrook Juvenile Handicap, but Pearl of Asia, a sister to Icing, got away nicely and won well. Allez again refused to line up anC was left when the barrier wnet up La Bru leading out from Lord Midas, Military Maid, Veldette, The Tryst Lady Drake and Pearl of Asia. The last-named quickly ran up behind La Bru and Lord Midas, and thus they turned into the staright. Once ir line for the judge Pearl of Asia asserted her claim and came on to wi*i by two lengths from La Bru, whe was three lengths ahead of Lore Midas. Military Maid was fourth and then came Veldette, Royal Huntress and Lady Drake. A Hot Favourite. Le Marquis and Little Dorrit carried half the investments on the Landguard Maiden and returned the dividends. Le Marquis jumped out smartly

great struggle for second place, Parquet getting the verdict by a head from Entail, with Tiger Gain only u head away. The Bigot was a close fifth and there was a big gap baci< to Brazen King and Winsome Lu. Easy for Te Huia. Dark Eagle was much better backed than Morning Flight and Te Huia in the Harrison Hack Handicap, but Te Huia won easily from War Lap, who was making his second appearance on the day. Te Huia ran to the front going out of the straight and led Golden Orchid, Morning Flight, War Lap, Dark_Eagie and Amatory along the back. Golden Orchid lost her position and Te Huu led Morning Flight, Amatory and Golden Orchid past the half-mile. Karerenui moved up to second place o.t the turn and followed Te Huia into the straight, with Amatory, Dark Eagle, Morning Flight and War Lap next. Te Huia ran home a winner by a length, War Lap being second, two lengths ahead of Karerenui. Morning flight was fourth and then came Amatory and Dark Eagle. Sternchase Gets There. Sternchase was at oods on for the Matarawa Hack Handicap and managed to get home ahead of the despised Deficit. Trebor jumped out in front ot Baron Bold, Sternchase, Deficit and Pretty Lass, but Deficit hit the front inside a furlong and led Baron Bola and Sternchase past the half-mile. Amoroso improved his position crossing the top and followed Deficit into the straight, with Sternchase coming fast. The favourite, wide out on the course, finished very fast to catch Deficit a few strides oft the post and wm by a neck. Two and a-half lengths back was Pretty Lass, with Amoroso, Trebor and Baron Bold at intervals. Last to Laughing Lass. Amigo (£129741 and Laughing Las» (£11241) were best backed in a big Spool on the last race, though there w ere only five starters, and Laughing Lass scored a good win. Laughing Lass was first to break Ihe line but inside a furlong Life Guard dashed to the front and lea Laughing Lass past the live furlongs, with a gap ol two lengths back to Amigo. Notium and Airing. Lite Guard held his advantage across the top with Amigo three lengths behind land Notium handy. The favourite [attempted to run up to the leaders j across the top but Laughing Lass ranged beside Life Guard on the horn - turn and went on with it, winning by a length and a-half from LiR Guard. Amigo was a similar distance back, with Notium fourth and Airing beaten off. Details of results arc:— FORDELL HACK HURDLES (Of £150; 1 mile 41 furlongs.) 4—DON ERMA (Mr. G. A.
