TE AROHA TO-DAY

Merries Memorial Cup Field CHANGES OF LLANGOLLEN REVIEW OF PROSPECTS (Special to “Chronicle.") AUCKLAND, Feb. 24. The fields for the opening day at Te Aroha to-morrow have dwindled in rather startling fashion, although this is perhaps understandable in the case of where so many horses failed to race up to expectations at the Waikato meeting last week-end. Now the fields will be of handy size and the racing should lack nothing in interest. Indications are that the Te Aroha Jockey Club will require fine weather only to enable it to exceed its £56,257 total isator turnover recorded twelve months ago. The course is in excellent order. Win-and-place betting will be In vogue. The seventeen left in the big event, the Herries Memorial Cup, makes for a field quite big enough and it should prove a contest worthy of the fourfigure prize. The stablemates Round Up and Valamito head the list. They will not be bracketed, a factor that in the north these days is a sore point to many of the regular racegoers. Both these horses should run well. Valamito’s defeat last Monday

was perhaps excusable. This was his first run since he fell at Ellerslie three weeks earlier and it is possible that he might have wanted the race. In any case Valamito may be difficult to beat. Llangollen's Chances.

Llangollen is the horse of the moment and she should run a great race here unless it is decided to reserve her for the sprint or the mile. It is most unusual for a horse to be accepted for in three races at a meeting of this importance. It is in Llangollen’s favour that she runs kindly in her races and is not a puller, so she ought to race most prominently. Last March she won the mile and aquarter Tauranga Cup under 7.74 and now she has IWb. more, but she is a much better horse now. In the Tauranga event she defeated Grateful, King Rey and Parquet, who finished in that order behind her. Malagai's owner must have been very disappointed with his showing last Saturday in the Storey Memorial and on that race alone he could have little chance here. However, he was hanging out and the Te Aroha track is the other way round, right-handed. Lady Montana went a very solid race behind Scotland last week and should again run well, and so, too, will her conquerer, who still appears to be very lightly weighted now that he has shown a form recovery. Master Brierly was in the money last weekend. He has a good record in this race, having won it twice and being fourth once.

De Friend is a much improved horse and he seems certain to be right in the thick of the fight. Kena is coming back to form. Gay Rose, Jonathan, Tooley Street, Jack Tar, Golden Sheila and Black Musk are all liable to show up, so it is a difficult race. But Llangollen is the first choice over Lady Montana if she runs, with Malagigi,' Dd Friend, Scotland, Master Brierly, Kena an! Jonathan place possibilities. The class in the Waihou Handicap is a bit stronger than it was on Monday at Te Rapa, but Llangollen, up a couple of pounds, should again show up if reserved. Gay Chou and Suleiman will both make it interesting, especially the former, who won at Ellerslie four weeks ago in his first outing after a long spell. Royal Bachelor may win if he is allowed his own way out in front, and Palustre and Maori Song arc both nicely placed. Bachelor King, Anion, Mon Acre, Tosh and Lady Heath are useful lightweights. Suleiman and Gay Chou may fight it out. Champion Hack Cup. Royal Appellant will again be racing over his favourite distance in the mile Hot Springs Handicap, and Coronation will be a big favourite for the Champion Hack. The two-year-old Esquire has been galloping brilliantly at Takanini and he may bother Silver Stick and Foxmond in the Juvenile. Estra is nicely placed in the Waitoa Hack, and Silver Eagle, twice unlucky last week-end, reads nicely in the Shaftesbury Hack. The Hurdles may go to Pyrenees. Form horses engaged to-morrow are the following:—
