Large Number of Buildings

ACCOMMODATING THE STAFF Associated with the running of a Royal New Zealand Air Force base are a large number of people who seldom, if ever, are called upon to perform flying duties and these will add largely to the number of men stationed at Ohakea when it is in full commission. The various activities which they will discharge will also require many structures of varying size. A total of 120 airmen will be housed in the airmen’s barracks which will be the largest single unit on the station. Consisting of four wings and a central block it will incorporate a social room and recreation hall. Garage accommodation will be found tor 40 motor-cars. For the officers barracks are being erected to meet the needs of 60 men, the officers’ mess being of a single storey design. Recreation facilities call for the building of a swimming bath, and the laying of the grounds for cricket, football, hockey and tennis. Another feature of the landscape will be a water tower for fire-fighting purposes. The administration building, which will provide accommodation for control units, will also have the meteorological station on the roof. Tenders have been let or are about to be let for tho construction of 32 single unit houses for married men, a guard house, hospital, and storm water and sewerage drainage.
