MAN BADLY BURNT

UNUSUAL EXPLOSION OF BLASTING POWDER

MAY LOSE SIGHT OF EYE [ Per Pr«<* Awuciation.) TAURANGA, Feb. 23. A serious explosion of blasting powder occurred to-day at Welcome Bay, about four miles from Tauranga, resulting in G. Dunton being badly burnt on the left hand, arm, face, and body. He was engaged blasting logs. Shortly after 4 p.m. he returned to the house carrying a bag containing about five pounds of blasting powder in his left hand. He stopped near the back door to talk to his wife. At the point where he stood water was dripping slightly from a tank above. The drips apparently caught on the left-hand trousers pocket in which there was a small quantity of sodium chlorate and a box of safety matches, and soaked through, causing the sodium and matches to ignite. These in turn ignited the powder, which exploded. He caught the full force with his left hand, which was very severely burnt, also his arm. His clothing caught on fire but was torn off by his wife and others, but he suffered burns on portions of the body and left leg. He was sent to Tauranga Hospital, where it is feared he may lose the sight of his right eye.
