ATHLETIC MEETING W. R. TICK SHIELD COMPETITION. (Own Correspondent) MARTON, Feb. 22. Congratulations to the Marton Athletic and Cycling Club for the excellent manner in which they staged the first contest for the W. R. Tuck Shield competition between Marton and Wanganui athletes and cyclists on Tuesday night on Marton Park. At short notice the local club arranged with Wanganui a most interesting programme of running, cycling and field events, and with efficient officials lhe meeting went off without a hitch. There was only one mishap when Hazelwood fell at one of the corners in the two-mile cycle event bringing down two other riders, but. fortunately without any serious injury. The Marton team won the contest, gaining 73 points to Wanganui’s 69. There was a very convivial gathering at St. Andrew’s Hall, at the conclusion, when all the competitors were entertained at supper by the ladies, and congratulatory speeches were made by Mr. C. C. McDonald (president of Marton Club). Mr. F. Purnell (Mayor), and Mr. S. Christopher on behalf of the Marton competitors whilst Messrs. Bourgeois and Morgan replied on behalf of the visitors. The wish was expressed that the contest should be held annually and the next one at Wanganui, which met with the hearty approval of all concerned. Thanks were extended to the local club by Mr. Bourgeois for Marton’s assistance in arranging free transport for the visitors, who showed their appreciation with three hearty cheers. The classification of the competitors in A and B grades and senior and junior classes was ustified by the excellent racing in all branches of the sport and was appreciated by the general public. PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK. AN INTERESTING PROGRAMME. The programme for Physical Fitness Week has so far proved very interesting and the remaining fixtures are:— Thursday.—Marton Junction School sports on the school grounds. Friday.—Local schools’ swimming sports in Marton Baths. Saturday. Separate displays in Marton Park by Maori Girls’ College, Huntley School, Girl Guides. Boy Scouts and the Fire Brigade and St. John Ambulance conjointly. Sunday.—Combined Church service in the Civic Theatre at 8 p.m. BOWLING NOTES. The following bowlers will represent Marton in all-day match at Levin on Saturday:—Purnell, Goebel, Mogridge, Healy, W. Marr. F. Green, Lourie, Morrison, Mclndoe, Barton, Ashton. Humphries, Brabyn, Bland, Brown, Hempieman. Gronn. Watt, Bunter. Hamer, Gibbs, Kilpatrick, upchurch, Blomfield. During the week-end the Takaro bowlers win pay a visit to Marton, with eight rinks, when an all-day competition will take place, play starting at 10 a.m., local players are requested to place their names on the board as three more rinks are required.

MARTON CHIC THEATRE. “SING YOU SINNERS.” For the first time in his long and colourful motion picture career, Bing Crosby fails to ‘get the girl” in. his new comedy, Paramount’s ‘Sing You Sinners,” which will open to-night at the Civic Theatre. Instead, this is done by romantic Fred Mac Murray, who will be seen as Bing’s brother in this story of family life.
