BOWLING

WANGANUI CENTRE VETERANS MEET IN ANNUAL CONTEST RECORD NUMBER OF ENTRIES Yesterday afternoon a function that has now become an annual one was very successfully carried out by the Wanganui Bowling Centre on the Wanganui Club’s green. The function referred to was Veterans’ Day, instituted some seven years ago and regularly carried out each year since its inauguration. On this occasion a record number of veterans took part, some 16 rinks being engaged in friendly games during the afternoon. The proceedings were opened by the president of the Centre, Mr. Lewis Bassett, who extended a cordial welcome to the veteran bowlers, and expressed his pleasure at the presence of His Worship the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Rogers, who joined with Mr. Bassett in welcoming the veterans, and said that it was very significant that their reunion should take place on the eve of Physical Fitness Week. He said that he was not a bowler himself, but he envied the bowlers who were all able to actively participate in the games of to-day. Mr. Bassett, on behalf of the Centre, wished all present a very happy and enjoyable afternoon. Two games of eleven heads each were played, and during the interval afternoon tea was dispensed in the spacious pavilion where the tables were very artistically decorated with dahlias and other seasonal flowers. Mrs. Bassett and a band of willing lady workers attended to the wants of the bowlers in the dispensation of tea. The result of the games showed the rink skipped by Mr. P. Rush as the winner. In concluding the function, Mr. Bassett presented the winners with suitable badges and congratulated the winners on their success. Mr. Beswick briefly returned thanks to the Centre on behalf of the players for a very pleasant and enjoyable afternoon. Cheers for the winners brought to a close a most successful day. * Results of play:— First Game. England, J. T. Williams, Penn, Robertson 6, v. Newsome, Scoullar, Ellis, Rush 14. Morrison, Spriggens.
