BRITISH PROTEST
JAPANESE BOMBING NEAR HONGKONG. LONDON, Feb. 21. The British Government has instructed the British Ambassador iti Japan, Sir Robert Craigie, to protest against the bombing of Britisa territory near Hongkong by Japanese planes early this morning while raiding the border village of Shumcimn.
LANCHOW RAID
THE CHINESE VERSION Received Feb. 22, 5.5 p.m. CHUNGKING, Feb. 21. The Chinese version of the Lanchow raid says that all the Chinese planes are safe and that nine Japanese were shot down.
OFFICIAL SHOT
GRANDSON OF LI HUNG CHANG Received Feb. 22, 5.5 p.m. SHANGHAI, Feb. 21. The Marquis of Li Kuo-chieh, a grandson of the famous Li Hung Chang, who was connected with the puppet Government in Nanking, was assassinated by gunmen in the International Settlement. Li Hung Chang, who was born about 1823 in the Province of ArtTiwei and died at Peking in 1901, was a noted Chinese statesman who was known as “the Bismarck of Asia.”
HAINAN ISLAND
PUPPET ADMINISTRATION (Independent Cable Service.) HONGKONG, Feb. 21. The Japanese have established Chinese puppet administrations at Hoihow and Kiungchow, in Hainan Island. The Chinese claim to be resisting the further occupation of the island.
MILITARY SECRETS ACT
PREVENTION OF ESPIONAGE INTRODUCTION TO DIET. Received Feb. 22, 5.5 p.m. TOKIO, Feb. 21. The Military Secrets Act being introduced to the Diet provides for a maximum of 10 years’ gaol for collectors of information that may be useful to foreign Powers, including statistics relating to production and storage, war material, communications, aircraft equipment and shipping for military use. The Act coveras the Pacific mandates.
CHINESE POLICEMEN SHOT
GUNMEN IN INTERNATIONAL SETTLEMENT Received Feb. 22, 11.5 p.m. SHANGHAI, Feb. 22. Gunmen entered the western district of the international settlement this morning, killing one Chinese policeman and wounding four. Afterwards they escaped into the Japanesecontrolled area.
TERRIFIC AIR RAID
CASUALTIES AT ICHANG Received Feb. 22, 11.30 p.m. HONGKONG, Feb. 22. At least 180 were killed and 250 wounded in a terrific Japanese air raid on Ichang.
