FORM AT TE RAPA
POINTERS FOR TE AROHA PROMISING CANDIDATES. (Special to “Chronicle.") AUCKLAND, Feb. 21. One of the outstanding efforts on the opening day at Te Rapa was the success of Scotland’s brother Odtaa in the Trial. He met with interference in the second furlong and according to his rider he was nearly knocked over, with the result that he was tailed off, a bad last, at the home turn. His finishing run was like that of Scotland, so with the latter winning the big race later in the afternoon it was a proud day for their breeder, Mr. N. R. Souter, of Cambridge. In this event there was some support for Meadow Rose, the four-year-old sister to Farland, and she revealed a lot of pace, being the leader to inside the home stretch. She then faded badly, but it was interesting as indicating that she has the family brilliancy and her turn is not far away. Two horses, Tea Gong and Estro, were also accepted for in this race, but tie former did not run, his owner being concerned in the Don Walla incident. They are both by
Tea Tray from Tambourine. A Generous Dividend. Manawahe was made favourite at Matamata a fortnight earlier, but backers soon forgot all about him when they were seeking the winner of the Frankton Hurdles last Saturday, and a big double-figure dividend rewarded his loyal supporters. It is held that he might not have won had that tragic fall not occurred. That might have been so, but it was overlooked by many at Matamata that his one blunder there cost him any winning change he held, for his rider lost an iron. Manawahe will have his next race at Te Aroha, his ’table companion Pyrenees also being entered there. In his previous starts Brazen Bold had displayed a good deal of waywardness. and both days at Thames last month he ran very wide on the home turn. At Matamata he took charge of his rider for a time before the race actually started, and it was pleasing to see him line up quietly at the barrier at Te Rapa the first day. So well did he run that he finished fourth, not more than a couple of lengths from the winner, and he ought to get on the winning list before the season ends. He is by Brazen from Ridicule, a mare by Absurd from Cheloma, by Llangwm, the colt’s dam being a sister to Nincompoop, A.J.C. Breeders’ Plate vic-
A feature of Nora Gregor’s firstday success at the Waikato meeting was the generous manner in which she ran on. Having drawn number 12 position at the barrier it was not surprising to find her fairly well back in the early stages, especially when Sir Lysander ran up exceedingly fast in the second furlong. Nora Gregor made up her leeway very quietly and she had only to be kept going to overhaul the leaders one by one, her display being very encouraging. This filly, by the successful young sire Bulandshar, is a half-sister to Ivar, her stable companion, the latter also going a fine race into fourth place in the open mile later in the afternoon.
By his success in the sprint at Te Rapa on the first day Farland made his winning score to date up to six, all obtained on this track, so once again he proved his partiality for this course, proving too that his form at Trentham last month was all wrong. He prefers left-handed courses generally, but will only give of his best at Waikato headquarters. Llangollen, conceding Farland 211 b., made a most gallant effort to overhaul him when he had four lengths’ break on her at the distance. She got to within a length of him at the post, a sterling effort. If Llangollen contests the longer events at Te Aroha next week-end she will not lack support.
Beeswing made every post a winning one in the Beerescourt Hack on Saturday at Te Rapa and the manner in which she was easily holding her own at the finish suggests that she will be seen in a much more improved role in future. There are great possibilities about this four-year-old daughter of Whirlwind and Black Peri. She is not over big but she has the pace and evidently the stamina. Her dam is Mountain Dream, and so she ranks as a relative of Erie and Pyrenees.
