POPULAR VICTORY
VETERAN S” SUCCESS K SMITH’S BREASTSTROKE WIN Perhaps the most popular victory of Saturday evening at Invercargill, states the Otago Daily Times, was that of L. Smith, the veteran Wanganui breaststroker, in the 100 yards men’s breaststroke championship. Holder of the men’s furlong breaststroke title for eight years, until he was beaten by J. C. W. Davies at New Plymouth last year, Smith -staged an amazing comeback on Saturday and by the narrowest of margins just got home from the Otago champion, \v. Dyson, in the 100 yards event. It was the first time that this race had been included in a national championship programme, and it seemed singularly fitting that Smith, who is retiring from competition, should have made it the medium of his farewell to championship swimming. With such fine breaststrokers as Smith, Dyson, Davies, and the Wellington swimmer, Spry, lining up for the final, it was little wonder that the race provided one of the thrills of the evening, and the final lap was a neck-and-neck struggle between the placed swimmers, which brought the crowd to its feet. The cheer that went up when Smith was announced as the winner was as much a tribute to his popularity as was the presentation from the officials and competitors at the meeting, which was made to him at the conclusion of the session.
