LOADING FACILITIES AT STATION (Own Correspondent.) OHAKUNE, Feb. 21. A request which had been made for additional loading facilities at the Ohakune railway station has been granted by the Minister of Lands, Hon. F. Langstone. An additional siding having lhe holding capacity for 23 waggons, situated behind the goods sheds, has been approved. The Minister said that he understood that owing to the growth of the vegetable output in Ohakune this was necessary. This should cope with the output for some time.
RUAPEHU PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ SPORTS ASSOCIATION
A meeting of the executive of the above association was held at Ohakune.
The annual swimming sports are to be held at the Raetihi baths on Friday, February 24. The programme is as follows:—Seniors: Freestyle 50yds., breaststroke 25yds.. backstroke 25yds.’ and diving. There is also to be an inter-school relay towing event of one width.
The following draw of the cricket and baseball rounders was agreed upon:—March 13, Raetihi v. Rangataua: Convent v. Ohakune, at Ohakune. March 10: Convent v. Raetihi at Raetihi; Rangataua v. Ohakune at Ohakune.
PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK The procession which started from the Ohakune Post Office and proceeded to the Junction presented quite an attractive spectacle, for the opening of Physical Fitness Week, which started on Saturday. The procession was ied by two pipers, followed by a military detachment from the Watouru military camp, which comprised four military lorries, two 14-pounder guns and motor-cyclists. Next followed Boy Scouts, school children and numerous motorcars. There eyas a large attendance at the park in the afternoon, where an exhibition of signalling and firing of the guns was given by the men from the camp. There were also Caledonian games. Highland dancing, tossing the caber and putting the shot. There were races for children and adults. The baby show for babies under 12 months resulted in Mr. and Mrs. P. Johnsons baby girl winning. first prize. The winner of the babies over 12 months was not decided, but the winner of this event will be announced at the dance, which is to be held next Saturday evening at the Majestic Hall. Ohakune.
PLUNKET DANCE AT OHAKUNE The Ohakune Plunket Society held a very successful dance in the Railway Hall on Saturday evening. The music for the dancing was provided by Mrs. Leckie, assisted by Miss M. Leckie, who, in turn, provided several extras. During the evening numerous novelty dances took place, whilst lhe supper was served by (he ladies of the committee. Mr. J. Hardie proved a capable M.C. and the dancing went off with a swing.
Among those present were Mealtimes Perry. Tocker, White. Goile, Moeller and Leckie; Misses Barbara Dobbie, Christine O’Connell, Mavis Deadman, Joan Delamar, Claric Riley, Dorothy Dalgiell.
