RANGITIKEI COUNIT LOAN
Sir,—The ratepayers in the Rangltlkei county are being asked by the County Council to support the raising ot a loan ot £ll,OOO for the reconstruction of small bridges throughout the county.
The r,lending of this loan will be spread over a number of years, so my reason for writing on this matter is to point out that this work, being purely maintenance, in my opinion should be done out of revenue. The amount to be spent annually out ot the loan, I understand, will be approximately £lOOO, plus Government subsidy. The council has been purchasing its machinery for road work on what may be termed tne “time-payment” system, by borrowing from the Main Highways Board. I am inclined to think they are carrying their borrowing policy too far. f am well aware that a certain number would support any policy that would remove the burden from their own shoulders. I think our councillors are afraid that the rising generation will have things made too easy for them, but by the way we are heading at the present time they can get that idea out ot their heads. However, I feel sure the council would be pleased if a majority of ratepayers would record their vote on the 22nd and let them know whether their policy is being approved or not. Personally, for reasons above stated, I intend to vote against the loan proposals.—l am, etc., A. STUART. "Runnymede," 16/2/39.
