GOOD BOWLING BY WALSH

SIR JULIEN CAHN’S TEAM MATCH WITH THE MINOR ASSOCIATIONS HOME SIDE MAKES 206 I Per Pro. Aitociation.] PALMERSTON N., Feb. 20. I Sir Julien Cahn's team began a twoday match against the Minor Associa- ! tions, at Palmerston North sports I ground io-day, and when stumps were i drawn the visitors, in reply to Association's first innings total of 206, ■had lost four wickets for 162. I The day was overcast and there iwas a fairly stiff cross wind. The | wicket was in good order, but not I fast enough to assist the express bowlers. Lush, Watts, and Pritchard, i whose work war. overshadowed by that 'of Walsh, the left-hand spin bowler, 'who broke Ihe great partnership of ! Evans and Murchison, and who went on to take eight wickets for 37. Features of the day were the batting of Evans and Murchison for the Associations, the fast rate of scoring by the home team, the bowling of the iex-Australian, Walsh, and the master|ly, if unenterprising, batting of Hardstaff.

The teams consist of 12 a-side, and at stumps Sir Julien Cahn's men required 44 runs, with seven wickets still in hand, to equal the Association's first innings total. The day was definitely chiliy, particularly for the spectators, but the attendance, difficult to estimate, must have been close to 2000.

I The Associations had first use of the | wickets and Robertson, Evans and Murchison played the bowling with confidence, scoring at a very fast rate. The first 50 came in 28 minutes and the century in 63 minutes. With iEvans and Murchison well set. a substantial score seemed possible, but Walsh, with a wicket to suit, soon put a different complexion on the game. :He was mainly responsible for dismissing the side for such a small total. I The visitors began just after three, but they were not enterprising. Mudge started well, but soon snicked PritIchard into the slips for Gallichan to [take a catch. Two more wickets fell quickly, but Hardslaff and Oldfield, and then Hardstaff and Phillipson, I batted soundly to establish the team in a strong position. At stumps Hardstaff had had one life, but, otherwise he played all the bowlers with the utmost confidence, but without an apparent desire to force the pace.
