Lyons, in a national broadcast said: • “As long as the present disturbed ' state of international relations perisists Australia will be in a position lof danger. Our safety can best be (guaranteed by continuing as we are I doing with an extensive defence pro- ! gramme. If the democracies stand ; fast and united in their policy of I rearmament to resist aggression there i is hope for the world.” | Mr. R. J. Heffron, leader of the State Labour Party, in his first public statement on defence, said that he supported the proposed large Federal expenditure on defence provided it was properly directed. The New South Wales State Government has advised the military authorities that it is willing to reorganise its programme of public works to begin the construction of railways, roads, and other urgent military works.
