French troops throughout Syria are ready for action after the resignation of the Syrian Government as a protest against the French promulgated law allowing religious missions. There were riots and anti-French demonstrations during the week-end and five deaths are reported. The underlying cause Ui uie trouble is France’s refusal to release Syria from the mandate, which is due to expire on T *”uary 1, 1940. but is now extend' in view of Italian and propaganda.
