The Rev. W. C. Wood, of Auckland, left by the Monterey on Friday evening on a two months’ holiday visit to Australia.
Mr. L. F. Row, city engineer, at Wanganui, is attending the annual conference of the New Zealand Institute of Engineers at Auckland.
Mr. M. A. Kitchen leaves to-day for Wellington, where he will attend the annual conference of the Institute of Opticians of New Zealand. He will return on Friday.
Mr. J. Siddells, who is in hospital in Wellington, expects to be out in a month's time. At a meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board yesterday it was decided to congratulate him on his recovery.
Mr. H. E. Edgley, chairman, of the Napier Chamber of Commerce, who Is to leave Napier in May on a tour abroad will represent the chamber at the Empire Chambers of Commerce Conference in London in July.
Mr. W. J. Rogers was welcomed back to his seat at the Wanganui Harbour Board at yesterday’s meeting, the chairman, Mr. N. G Armstrong, congratulating him on his recovery from a recent illness.
Dr. Julius Stone, who has been appointed to thq chair of law at Auckland University College, is expected to arrive in Auckland by the Rangitata from London on March 9. Professor Stone will take up his duties on March 13.
The Rev. M. A. Rugby Pratt, Christchurch, has completed 12 years as connexional secretary of the Methodist Church of New Zealand, and was congratulated at the annual conference of the church in Christchurch on Friday on the beginning of his third six-year term in office.
Dr. R. M. Campbell, economic adviser to the New Zealand Government in London, arrived at Auckland on Friday by the Monterey from the United States. One purpose of his visit is to attend the triennial shipping freights conference, to be held in Wellington toward the end of next month.
Captain R. D. Slewart has been appointed deputy-harbourmaster and second pilot at Wanganui consequent on the appointment of the former deputy, Captain F. G. Taylor, to the position of harbourmaster in succession to Captain F. E. Naylor, who has retired. Captain W. Rolling has been appointed to the position of third pilot.
Mr. J. Thorn, M.P., for Thames, who was Government representative at the International Labour Conference at Geneva in 1938, will arrive in Wanganui to-morrow. He will address a meeting of delegates on the Labour Representation Committee, Trades and Labour Council delegates and Union and branch executives on the work of the International Labour Office.
Mr. Arthur Reynolds, formerly ol the wireless operating staff at Milford Sound, who left New Zealand some months ago to join the trans-Atlantic liner Ascania as second wireless officer, has succeeded to an executive post with the radio staff of the Queen Mary. Mr. Reynolds is the first New Zealander to be appointed to the complement of the Queen Mary. He received his professional training in Wellington and Christchurch.
The Rev. Robert Thornley, formerly of Christchurch, was relieved of circuit work for another year by the annual conference of the Methodist Church of New Zealand on Friday This will enable him to remain for a furl her term in England, where he is engaged at a London Methodist Mission, and is also studying for the degree of bachelor of divinity. Mr. Thornley was accepted as a minister in full connection by the conference and will be ordained in England.
Canon D. B. Malcolm, secretary of the Wellington Diocesan Centenary Appeal Fund, is visiting Wanganui and is staying with the Rev. W. M. Smallfield, Durie Hill. Canon Malcolm preached at Christ Church on Sunday night and will attend the induction of the Rev. V. C. Venimore as parish priest of St. Peter’s, Gonville. to-night, and will leave for Taranaki to-morrow. Canon Malcolm was formerly in charge of the St. Peter’s parish.
