HILLMAN MINX

IMPROVEMENT FOR 1939. ■ The Hillman Minx 10 h.p. model for 1939 retains all the successful fea- ■ tures of the previous year as well as ■ numerous improvements and refine- ' ments in engineering and coachwork. From the engine of the latest model, however, come new smoothness .of running, new silence of operation and new economy of outstanding degree. Under observation of the Royal Automobile Club a Hillman Minx recently averaged no less than 47 m.p.g. on a test of 1000 miles. Another important development is the new all-silent four-speed synchromesh gearbox. Redesigning had produced a gearbox which, while just as pleasant and simple to drive as its predecessor, possesses the additional 1 virtue of great silence. Further, it lis provided with a quick-action dipstick which reveals in an instant—from the driving seat—the level of lhe oil in the gearbox. The back axle has also been redesigned for silent. operation. In addition, there are new fea- , tures making for increased smoothness of running and roadability. These include an improved system of engine mounting, which incorporates bonded rubber cushions and “smoothride” suspension, embodying springs that, adjust themselves to variations of load and road surface and new piston-type shock absorbers which retain positive adjustment.

Refinements are numerous, including gear lever being entirely clear of driver’s and passenger’s knees; “easilift” jacking system and snap-on petrol filled cap. Inside the car refinements include improved and much more luxurious front seats; new design instrument panel, with quick-vision dials, and a new safety oil warning light and a petrol gauge accurately marked in gallons. The speedometer now has a sin. dial, and is floodlit for night driving.

External improvements include new-type bumpers, with over-riders, and the radiator grille is now in rustless chromium plate. The headlights are also of improved type, and give longer and broader beams. The roof of all saloon models is of new, safety all-steel pattern. Apart from t/ie foregoing the 1939 Hillman Minx retains the wealth of excellent Hillman features.
