DECREASE IN EXPORTS BUTTER AND CHEESE SHIPMENTS FOR SIX MONTHS Exports of butter and cheese for the first half of the 1938-39 season to January 31 show a substantial decrease, compared with those for the corresponding six months of last season. Exports of butter at 64,731 tons for the latest period are down by 19.229 per cent., and exports of cheese at 38.057 tons show a decrease of 3495 tons, or 9.183 percent. Shipments of butter last month totalled 10,429 tons, compared with 15,515 tons for January, 1938, a decrease of 5086 tons. Shipments of butter for the six months ended January 31 totalled 64,731 tons, compared with 80,142 tons for the corresponding period of last season, a decrease of 15,411 tons, or 19.229 per cent. Details of the six months' exports of butter compare as follow:
•Includes Southampton Of the 64,731 tons of butter exported during the last six months, 63,642 tons went to the United Kingdom and 1089 tons to other markets. The latter shipments compare with 2736 tons for the corresponding period of last season, a decrease of 1647 tons. Shipments of cheese last month were 6507 tons, compared with 8042 tons for January, 1938, a decrease of 1535 tons. Shipments of cheese for the six months ended January 31 were 38,057 tons, compared with 41,552 tons for the corresponding period of last season, a decrease of 3495 tons, or 9.183 per cent. Details of the exports of cheese for the first half of this season and last compare as follow:
With the exception of 35 tons to “other countries," the whole of the cheese exported this season has gone to the United Kingdom. Australian Shipments to U.K. Shipments of butter from Australia to the United Kingdom were 8690
tons, as against 10,348 tons for January, 1938, a decrease of 1658 tons. For the six months to January 31, the shipments totalled 56,555 tons, as against 47,265 for the corresponding period of last season, an increase of 9290 tons. Shipments of cheese from Australia last month were 2594 tons, compared with 1611 tons for January, 1938, an increase of 983 tons. For the six months the shipments of cheese totalled 10,988 tons, compared with 6523 tons for the corresponding period of last season, an increase of 4465 tons. Britain's Imports Imports of butter into Great Britain last month totalled 39,399 tons, of which 26,168 tons were from Empire sources (New Zealand 11,783 tons and Australia 13.579 tons) and 13,231 tons from foreign countries. Britain's imports of cheese last month totalled 12,448 tons, of which New Zealand supplied 7693 tons and Australia 3046 tons. POSITION OF STOCKS The position of stocks of butter as at February 1 is reported by the Primary Products Marketing Department through the Dairy Board as follows:
