ANCIENT MAORI RELIC

ACCIDENTALLY DUG UP. DEFINITELY PRE-EUROPEAN. 1 Per Pres* Association.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 17. A Maori hei-tiki which is believed to have high value was accidentally found by a boy, Joseph Skinner, aged 12, while playing at the southern extremity of Titahi Bay. Skinner and companions were playing hide-and-seek and while he was awaiting companions, Skinner dug idly about the ground where he was sit ing and found the hei-tiki. It is about five inches long and three inches broad and was lying among some bones and what appeared to be ashes. When cleaned it was discovered to he of greenstone. The heitiki, which is not badly worn, was said by Dr. W. R. B. Olliver, Director of the Dominion Museum, to be definitely of pre-European age.
