MANAWATL RACING CLUB MAY ABSORB DANNEVIRKE? THE AUTUMN PROGRAMME It is understood that negotiations have been practically concluded for the amalgamation of the Dannevirke Racing Club with the Manawatu Racing Club, which will use the Dannevirke permits for an extra meeting in future. The programme for the Manawatu autumn meeting to be held on March 24 and 25. has been issued. It is little different from last year’s programme. On the first day there is the Awapuni Gold Cup, a weight-for-age event over a mile and a-quarter for a stake of £450, including a gold cup valued at £lOO. The King George Handicap., also over ten furlongs, carried a stake of £350, being worth £245 to the winner, The J M. Johnstone Memorial (six furlongs) is a £250 race, and the lowest stake for the remaining events is £2OO, save that the maiden race, the Autumn Plate, has a stake of £l5O. On the second day there is the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, a £4OO race for two-year-olds over seven furlongs at set weights with penalties and allowances. The Tamatete Handicap, over ten furlongs, carried a stake of £450, and the Longburn Handicap, for sprinters, is over seven furlongs for a stake of £250. The North Island Hack Plate, a £250 race over ten furlongs, should attract the best of the hacks. The lowest stake outside these is £2OO, save that £175 is provided for the StonVhurst Juvenile Handicap. Nominations for all events, together with a forfeit of £1 for the Sires’ Produce Stakes, will close on Monday, March 6.
