Mr. Douglas Martin, a representative of the Australian Gas Light Co., is visiting Wanganui. Sir Julien Cahn, of Stanford Hall, Loughborough, England, arrived in Wanganui yesterday by aeroplane from Auckland. He and Lady Cahn are at Foster’s Hotel. Mr. F. K. Turnbull has been appointed chief marshal of the Physical Fitness Week procession, which is to march and parade on Cook’s Gardens next Thursday night. Sir John Reed and Lady Reed, who have been staying at Foster’s Hotel during the week returned to Wellington to-day. Sir John Reed has been presiding over the sittings of the Supreme Court at Wanganui. • Dr. Julius Slone, who has been appointed to the chair of law at Auckland University College, is expected to arrive at Auckland by the Rangitata from London on Farch 9. Professor Stone will take up his duties on March 13. Detective-Sergeant N. W. Baylis, of Wanganui, is to be transferred to Auckland. Ho joined the police force
in Christchurch in 1921 and was stationed later in Dunedin, Timaru, and Wellington before coming to Wanganui. He was made a detective in 1925 and received his promotion to detec-tive-sergeant in Wanganui. Mr. Lionel Follett, of Wanganui, yesterday received cable advice of the death of his mother, Mrs. William Sprodc-Follclt, of “The Knole,” New Milton, England. During the war many Wanganui and New Zealand soldiers enjoyed the hospitality of Mrs. Sprode-Follett, who resided near Brockenhurst and kept open house for New Zealand wounded and convalescent troops. The news of her death will be learned with keen regret. The Rt. Rev. Monsignor C. J. Morkanc arrived al Wellington on Friday from Christchurch to join the Wanganella for Sydney. There he will connect with the Orcades for London. He will return to New Zealand by way of the United States. Mr. F. D. Young, a member of the Auckland staff of the Commercial Bank of Australia, has received notice
of his appointment as manager of the Hastings branch of the bank. Mr. and Mrs. Young will leave Auckland for Hawke’s Bay on Monday. The Rev. V. C. Venimore, M.A.. 8.D., will take up his appointment, as parish priest of St. Peter’s, Gonville, in succession to the Rew C. W. Solomon next week and will be inducted at St. Peter’s Church at 7.30 on Tuesday night by the Ven. Archdeacon J. R. Young. The Rev. Venimore was formerly curate of St. Mark’s Church. Wellington and has just spent two years in England, where he was assistant at St. Paul’s Church. Thorton Heath, Surrey. He returned to Wellington this week. The Rev. C. W. Solomon, who has retired from the position as parish priest of St. Peter's, Gonville, and Mrs. Solomon were made presentations at the monthly meeting of St. Luke’s Church Committee, Castlecliff. For the committee, Mrs. Stewart gave an engraved pen and pencil set to Mr. Solomon and a crystal vase to Mrs. Solomon in recognition df her service to the church and Sunday school. Other members also spoke, Mr. Solomon replying.
