The tenth Australian and New Zealand Cancer Conference, and the first held in New Zealand, was opened at Wellington to-day with a lar<ge representation of Dominion cancer workers and a strong Australian delegation. Sir James Elliott, the president of the New Zealand branch of the Empire Cancer Campaign, presided. The Minister of Health (Hon. P. Fraser) welcomed the delegates on behalf of the Government and expressed appreciation of the arduous work being done to combat the cancer scourge. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr. M. F. Luckie) extended the city’s welcome. The leader of the Australian delegation (Dr. Cumpston) conveyed fraternal greetings from the Australian cancer workers and stressed the common purpose of the work on both sides of the Tasman. The conference is expected to last three days. “Unfortunately, the cause of cancer has not yet been discovered, and too much stress cannot be laid on the need for intensified research,” said Dr. F. Dr. Maguire, who is a specialist in surgery, has made the trip in response to a special invitation by the New Zealand Cancer Campaign Committee and returns to-morrow.
