WANGANUI CUP
Twelve Acceptors For Next Week AUTUMN MEETING FIELDS LIST OF ACCEPTORS Twelve horses remained in the Wanganui Cup after acceptances had closed last night, leaving a very handy field to compete in the longdistance race for the fine stake of £650, which includes a £5O cup presented by Mr. T. Currie. Included is last year's winner, Brazen King, whose form this season has been very consistent. Wotan heads the list of acceptors, and between this Melbourne Cup winner and Brazen King comes that useful three-year-old, Beaupartir. The latter muist be accounted rather unlucky to be contesting the New Zealand classics in Defaulter’s year, for in an ordinary year he would most likely have been returned winner of the New Zealand Derby and the Great Northern Derby. He is certainly not overweighted at 8.10. Taitoru, a veteran of the Taranaki circuit, is also in the sprint. It is pleasing to find The Bigot engaged especially as he and Entail are the only candidates owned by members of the club. Tiger Gain, Siegmund, Aussie Ra, Rustem, Winsome Lu and Parquet complete the field, aq_d they should provide stout opposition, an interesting race and a close finish. The only defections of note are Master Cyklon, Amigo and Lickem, and Amigo is engaged in the sprint Two dropped out of the sprint field, these being Mittie (winner yesterday at Woodville) and Russian Ballet (who has gone amiss). This leaves seven in the field, including Laughing Lass and Notium, who paid the dividends in this race last year. The Victory Hack Handicap, with a stake of £2OO, lias attracted ten acceptors, with Dark Eagle and Amatory sharing topweight honours. Also engaged are several useful hacks. Another field of ten is set down for the Petre Hack Handicap, run over six furlongs. Defections have reduced the Tayforth Hack Handicap field to six. Eight are down to participate in the Westmere Hack Handicap, and there are nine in the Kai Iwi Maiden.
The trophy provided for the Juvenile Handicap has encouraged the owners of thirteen two-year-olds to continue their engagements, and here the list is headed by the smart filly Submission, with another winner in La Bru also engaged. The total acceptors for the eight events is 75, and even allowing for a couple of dual engagements there should bo an average of nine a race.
The comparison of acceptors With last year’s totals is as follows, the 1938 figures being given in parentheses:— Westmere Hack Hurdles 8 (8); Juvenile Handicap 13 (9); Kii Iwi Maiden 9 (12); Victory Hack Handicap 10 (7); Wanganui Cup 12 (13); Tayforth Hack Handicap G (7); Petre Hack Handicap 10 (7); Flying Handicap 7 (7).
