TE RAPA TO-DAY

The Storey Memorial Handicap WAIKATO RACING CLUB OPENING DAY’S PROSPECTS (Special to “Chronicle.") AUCKLAND, Feb. 17. Te Rapa is the scene of the provincial racing activities to-morrow and on Monday, and as usual the fields are high class, there being several horses from southern centres competing. This splendid track is in excellent order and the sport should be of the best. Betting will be under the win-and-place system. The outstanding event to-morrow is the Storey Memorial Handicap, run over eleven furlongs and this distance on the track suggests stamina as a first essential to success. There are fifteen left in and it is not expected that there will be many' withdrawals on the day. Round Up is nicely placed in view of his last success, in the A.R.C. Handicap with 9.3 on New Year's Day. If this race were run at Ellerslie he would be seriously recommended, for he has a wonderful record there. King Rey failed to show up at Rotorua and that form was too bad to be true. At his best he would have a chance.

Cheval de Volee at the moment looks as if he will be racing on a firm track, whereas his best efforts to date have been on soft tracks, so he will be tnipd out under different conditions. Nevertheless he is a surprising horse capable of leading all the way. Lady Montana is now racing at her best and her success at Trentham last month indicates that Jhe is again on the up grade. She has previously raced prominently at Te Rapa. Master Brierly would have a luxury weight if he were in anything like form, but he has no form of note and could not have received any more poundage. Malagigi finished second in the Takapuni Cup and then failed in heavy ground two days later. His former effort, however, was that of a good horse and he may be the hardest to beat.

Gay Rose, in her last two outings, has registered a second and a first, and as the long straight here suits'her she will be prominent, even if the going be firm. Jonathan has found Te Rapa a happy hunting ground and as he has been working brilliantly he is again ready to show his partiality for this track. Respectful does not appear to stay too well, but Jack Tar has shown improvement and a change of stable oft-times makes a wonderful difference. Of Scotland it can be said that his Rotorua Cup effort stamped him as being almost back to his best and he has receded so far in the weights that he may easily upset earlier calculations. Sergia has failed rather badly of late and she is obviously not in her form of last autumn. Black Musk and Parquet are long shots that sometimes come off. The issue may rest between Malagigi and Lady Montana. Open Sprint Field. The sprint field in the President's Handicap is of a useful size, not too big. and this will be all for the best. Llangollen won so well under 9.10 last Saturday that she may go close to repeating her victory in this class here in the spring. Suleiman led ail the way at Ellerslie three weeks ago and he should be a better horse now. Royal Bachelor has won twice in his last few outings and Bachelor King scored here in the spring. Farland, of course, regards Te Rapa as a “home away from home," for he has won all his five races on this course and he is still fit and well. Royal Appellant may be a surprise packet, for he came home weil in the last Ellerslie sprints and this course will suit him better. Sweet Rose and Tosh are speedy, and Lornacre, Te Monowai, Royal Vaals, Lady Meath and Te Poto are dangerous lightweights. The issue is left to Suleiman and Farland. In the opening race Gamos re ay commence his winning account after his two good finishing efforts at Thames, although it will be interesting to see if Estro can reproduce her iemarkable effort in the Wynyard Plate at Ellerslie. Donegal should be ail the better for his outing at Hawera last week and he and Airam may be prominent again in the Frankton Hurdles. It looks as if the two visiting youngsters, Nora Gregor and Silver Stick, may be too good for the pick of the northerners in the Juvenile Handicap, although Our Jean, Foxmond and Fils de Vaals are above the average. Kathbella is a smart hack sprinter and with the benefit of the full allowance she may be difficult to head off in the Linley Handicap. Golden Sheila appears to be eminently suited by the weight and distance of the Puketaha Handicap, and, Bronze Trail should show up In the Beerescourt Hack. Horses that should run well to-mor-row are:— Trial Stakes.—Gamos, Estro, Rev Lu. Frankton Hurdles —Donegal, Airam, Rozel. Juvenile Handicap.—Nora Gregor, Silver Stick, Our Jean. Stsrey Memorial Handicap.—Malagigi, Lady Montana, Scotland, or Jonathan. Linley Hack.—Kathbella, Penzance, Spearford. Puketaha Handicap. Golden Sheila, Ivar, Forest Acre. President's Handicap. Suleiman, Farland, Llangollen. Beerescourt Hack.—Bronze Trail, Beeswing, HigV Delight. 12.0 TRIAL STAKES (Of £2OO and £3 sweepstake; 6 furlongs.)
