SIR JULIEN CAHN'S TEAM

C. S. Dempster (Leicestershire).— One of England’s most outstanding batsmen; and eighth on last summer! averages. He is well known in Wanganui, being employed here 10 year; ago as coach of the Wanganui Technical College eleven, for whom hr compiled many brilliant centuries. He represented New Zealand on the 1921 and 1931 English tours, before leaving the Dominion six years ago to play i.r county cricket.

J. Hardstaif (Notts).—A devastating batsman, also well remembered by Wanganui enthusiasts, for his dashing 60 not out, while playing for the M.C.C. team, which visited the city in 1936. A leading English Test match batsman, he has come second to Hammond on the averages the last two seasons.

A. H. Dyson (Glamorgan).—A fine opening bat. who has made over a thousand runs for his county in each of the last six seasons. N. Oldfield (Lancashire). A polished an attractive batsman. Last season he was in great form, scoring just over 1800 runs. G. F. H. Heane (Notts).—A useful right-hand medium-pace spin bowler and a sound left-hand batsman. With

Smith (Essex). —A good slow bowler a.nd no mean batsman. He is considered by many critics as unlucky to secure a place in the English eleven last season. He has been a valued member of the Essex side since 1929. and played against New Zealand in 1931. E. R. Maxwell (Notts).— A wicketkeeper with a high reputation and a vigorous batsman. He has played for Sir Julien on many occasions, and last year he played for the M.C.C. against Australia. C. C. Goodway (Warwickshire).— Another first-class wicketkeeper. W. E. Phillipson (Lancashire). —A fast bowler, who has collected a har-

vest in wickets for his county over the last five years. He possesses a disconcerting swing, and last year accounted for Bradman. E. A. Watts (Surrey).—A medium fast bowler, at his best as an opener. He took 129 wickets last season, and also recorded some useful scores with the bat. J. G. Lush (New South Wales). —A. speed merchant, who was a strong candidate for the 1938 Australian team for England. His ability can be judged from the fact that he went to England on Sir Julien’s invitation. V. E. Jackson (New South Wales). —A useful swing and off-break bowler, and a fine batsman. He has met with considerable success in clue cricket in England, and his all-round ability was a great asset to the New South Wales side. H. Mudge (New South Wales).—A slow bowler, who was a thorn in the side of the last English team that visited Australia, and a solid bat. J. E. Walsh (New South Wales.—A. left-hand leg break and googly bowler and a fair batsman. He appeared for Leicestershire creditably last season, and his spin bowling is in world class.
