RECORD SOCCER CROWD

Scotland specialises in big soccer crowds and the New Year fixture between Glasgow Rangers an/1 Celtic at Ibrox Stadium, Glasgow, saw the record attendance broken for a League match in Great Britain. There were 120,000 people inside the ground and nearly 30,000 outside. Those outside were more fortunate than some hundreds inside. A great number could not see the play, and many were injured by being crushed against the barriers. New Year games in Scotland always attract big crowds and two years ago the same elute played before 94,811 spectators. The best attendance for a League" match in England was 82,905, at Stamford Bridge, when Arsenal visited Chelsea in 1935. Biggest of all Soccer crowds saw the Scotland-Eng-land match at Hampden Park, Glasgow, in 1937. The gate was reported to be 149,547.
