IMPORT LICENCES

CHANGE IN PROCEDURE SUPPLIES FOR GOVERNMENT | Per Press Associbtion.J AUCKLAND, Feb. 16. With a view to facilitating the issue lof licences in respect of goods im- I ported by merchants and private contractors for supply to Government departments or for use in Government contracts if had been decided, said the j Minister of Customs, Hon. W. Nash, to modify the procedure in connection with applications for licences. In making applications in respect of the first licensing period merchants and private contractors included in the lvalue of their imports during the cor- | responding period of 1938 the value of imports of goods supplied Io the [Government as well as imports for ordinary business purposes and licences had been issued accordingly. It was considered preferable in order to avoid any difficulties which might arise in that regard, that so far as import licences are concerned with gofrds imported for supply to the Government should be made the subject of septate applications in future. It would accordingly be necessary for importers io show the value of goods imported in 1938 excluding the value of goods Supplied to the Government departements. such latter value being shown 'separately. Ordinary licences would be issued on the basis of the former value. ■Separate applications should be made [from time to time in respect of goods [specially imported for supply to the Government or in replacement of {goods supplied ex ordinary stocks. The Minister also stated that it had been incorrectly reported that no licences were required for the importation of books and medicines. Licences were required for all commercial products but there was no restrictions on books and medicines.
