VICTORIA LEAGUE
SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY PRESIDENT FAREWELLED In the beautiful and spacious grounds of “Hikurangi,” the home of Mr. Hope Gibbons and Miss Gibbons, yesterday afternoon, a successful garden party was held by the members of the Victoria League. The league is fortunate in having the whole-hearted and practical sympathy of so generous a supporter as Miss Gibbons, who lent her grounds for the party. Pleasant arrangements had been made for the visitors, who found bright and comfortable garden chairs and lounge* on the lawn and also on the wide verandah facing the lawn. There was much to interest and entertain the visitors. The gardens on the terraces and round the by-paths leading down the hill were gay and colourful in the sunshine, the fine old trees, ferns, a profusion of hydrangeas, flowering shrubs and climbing plants exciting much admiration. The visitors were received by the hostess, Miss Gibbons, and Mrs. A. H. Boyes, president of the league. A well-laden produce stall, in charge of Mrs. N. R. Bain and Mrs. H. D. Bates, did brisk business, as also did the ice-cream stall, in charge of Miss Joan Barton and Miss Betty Adams. Afternoon tea was served on the lawn I and on the verandah, where tables I were adorned with low bowls of dah- | lias and maidenhair fern. In charge of the tea was Mrs. W. O. D. Ry all. assisted by Mesdames A. McPhail, S. McCallum and Miss Polson. A treasure hunt was won by Miss Lorraine Watkins. Mr. Hope Gibbons, on behalf of the Victoria League, thanked all for coming along to the party and said it gave them great pleasure to see so many present. He spoke briefly of the work of the league, both in New Zealand and England. Mr. Gibbons wished Mrs. Boyes (president) bon voyage, a pleasant trip and happy time abroad, all then singing “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”
Mrs. Boyes suitably replied and thanked all for their good wishes and also thanked Mr. Hope Gibbons and Miss Gibbons for their wonderful hospitality.
