CENTRAL CARNIVAL SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE KEEN INTEREST DISPLAYED In spite of the unfavourable wea ther outlook there was a large crowd of spectators and swimmers at th< Wanganui Central Swimming Club'i carnival last night and they were provided with some exciting contests in which keen interest was displayed. The air had a nip in it but the water was really good, and much favourable comment was made on the attractive appearance of the baths. One of the features of the evening's programme was an attempt by K. Welsh on the men's district 50 yards record, held conjointly by Welsh and N. Dowsett. Welsh swam very creditably under the conditions but failed by three-fifths of a second to beat the time of 26 2-s’sec. In the Thomas Shield relay race Central won from Gonville, with Wanganui East third. The Tingey Cup was also retained by Central, Gcnville's challenge tailing. The Central teams also carried off the honours in the Bonner Cup, a trophy foe a ladies' relay race, t< urns of four. In this the Central Club entered tv.o teams and they finished first and second, with Gonville third. The officials for the carnival were as follows:—Referee, Mr. R. Harrison; starter, Mr. A.
