Sunday was the thirtieth anniversary of the wreck of the Union Steam Ship Company's passenger steamer Penguin (top), which struck a rock in Cook Strait on February 12, 1909, and foundered with the loss of 75 lives out of the total of 107 on board. The lower picture shows one of the Penguin’s lifeboats washed ashore after the wreck.
