OHAKUNE BOROUGH COUNCIL

ELECTRICAL ENGINEER’S REPORT. There was one total interruption to the supply at 1.40 a.m. on the 18th. and a partial interruption by exceptionally strong gales. As was expected the seasonal decrease in water supply necessitated the purchase of a large percentage of units sold this being accentuated by the cold weather experienced during most of January. The figures purchased and sent out were 20,700 and 42,090 respectively. This represents a decrease of 43 per cent, in the former and an increase of 15 per cent, in the latter in January, 1938. Owing to the increased price per unit purchased and reduced discount, the cost of bulk power was not a great deal below last year, however. Maintenance work was carried out on the Diesel and No. 2 turbine, the temporary repairs mentioned in last month’s report being replaced by what is hoped, that of a permanent

As promised by the Public Works Department, six poles were erected in Ruapehu Road to replace decayed poles, a cut off now being required to transfer the lines to the new poles and thus complete the work. Reinspection of consumers’ installations was resumed and in two cases notice was served that disconnection will take place if the installations are not rewired within 14 days. Similar action is proposed in a number of cases where no action has been taken following the previous inspection. The control gate frame was completed and is now in position in the new dam. The gate is also now almost complete. Work on the dam is proceeding slowly, erractic deliveries of cement being a contributing factor. All idle meters have been placed in service while in a number of cases old meters are seriously overloaded and should be replaced. Authority is requested to anticipate next year’s estimates and arrange for spread delivery and first payment in 1939-40. A total of 50 meters should be ordered. The necessity also for additional transport facilities is becoming a seri-

ous matter and arrangements completed for delivery of a second vehicle in the first two months of the new financial year is absolutely essential. The cost of salaries and materials for January 1939 was £245 0s 6d and January 1938, £252 12s lid.
