HUNTERVILLE AFFAIRS
TOWN BOARD MEETING (Own Correspondent). HUNTERVILLE, Feb. 14. The monthly meeting of the Huntervi'lle Town Board was held on Monday night, Cr. R. A. Gordon presiding. Also present were Crs. E. W. Donovan, P. D. J. Smith. C. Stratford, A. H. Sutton and J. Klue. The Wanganui City Council wrote in connection with heavy traffic fees. —The board considered that the present arrangement, where the County Council collected the fees for Hunterville for a small commission was satisfactory but, on the motion of Crs. Stratford and Donovan, it was decided to ascertain whether to collect the fees itself the board would benefit.
An application for a rebate on rates was received, but not granted as the application was not in order. It was decided to support the Waitara Board in its tequest that the Government print by-laws for boards to lessen costs.
It was decided, on Ihe motion of the chairman and Cr. Smith, that the board contribute 14 to the Centennial memorial baths to be built at Petone. The Library Committee wrote asking the board for a grant to assist in gaining the services of a librarian. The letter stated that although the committee appreciate the valuable services of the voluntary librarians in the past the scheme was not altogether satisfactory.—On the motion of Crs. Stratford and Sutton, it was decided to consider the matter with next year’s estimates.
The Fire Brigade wrote stating that exits at the hall were unlit and one exit door kept locked. —Left lo Hall Committee. General Cr. Smith referred to Paraekaretu footpath, stating that it should be concreted if possible. He considered the work most important. The chairman agreed that the path required attention but at present the bridge was under repair. He suggested that, as in a number of cases the estimates had been underspent on some works, the clerk review the position and report to a special meeting and then the board could decide what extra work could be done.
Cr. Klue stated that £4O had been estimated for new seats for the hall and he considered this should be spent first. , On the motion of the chairman ana Cr. Smith, it was decided that the clerk ascertain what funds were available and a special meeting be held to discuss its spending. On the motion of of Crs. Klue and Sutton, it was decided that £4O be spent on seats for the hall and that the clerk obtain prices. Repairs to Marshall Road were left to the Works Committee.
Cr. Donovan referred to Paraekaretu Road, stating that it had been passed some time ago that the surface be improved. The chairman stated that the delay had been caused by the county grader being unavailable. This would shortly be available and then Paraekaretu and Rangatira Roads could be attended to.
On the motion of Crs. Stratford and Donovan, it was decided to ask owners of property through which Potaka Creek flower to clear the bed while the water was low.
A letter was read from a propertyowner who had been notified that property on which rates were outstanding and for which judgment had been obtained, would be sold to make up the amount owing. The letter pleaded hardship but the board stated that it was powerless, the matter now being in the hands of the Audit Department.
Mr. Dillon was granted grazing rights of a 1-acre section in Kotukutuku Road.
Mr. Brant was granted permission to fence a portion of Gordon Terrace.
Cr. Smith referred to the Domain not being left in order, as asked by the board, stating that the Cricket Ciub had had difficulty in using its mower.
Cr. Stratford explained that this was to be attended to.
Cr. Donovan asked if the groun 1 was to be mown this week. He said that the Cricket Club had not had fair treatment this season. The nub
had been generous in its donations tc the board and he considered the ground should be prepared. The chairman explained that it was heped to cut the ground this week. It had been unfortunate that the grass had not been kept down but it had been unavoidable. The Domain Beard, he explained, had also been generous to the Cricket Club, it costing 25s per day to cut the oval.
