Dominion Swimming Championships THREE HOLDERS DEFEATED SMITH FINISHES THIRD IN BREASTSTROKE f Per Press INVERCARGILL, Feb. 14. Three titles changed hands this evening at the opening of the New Zealand senior swimming championships at the Invercargill Municipal Baths. P. Hanan (Auckland), holder of the men’s 100 yards freestyle championship, was beaten by R. Hatchwell (Wellington). L. Newel! (Canterbury), one mile men’s freestyle champion, was beaten by A. T. F. Stokes (Canterbury), and P. E. Mathieson (Auckland), 400 metres men’s backstroke champion, although he finished an easy first, was disqualified for incorrect turning and the title went to C. Cliff (Canterbury). There were some thrilling finishes during the evening and the standard of swimming was high, but on the whole the times were slower than al most recent championship meetings.
