Meteorological Office, Wellington, Tuesday, February 14, 3 p.m. General Situation—Pressure is still relatively high to the north but a rapidly deepening westerly depression is moving on to the southern portion of the South Island. Over Tasmania barometers are rising. Forecast.—Winds: West to north, moderate to strong generally and rising to gale force in places from Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay southwards and a change to south-westerlies advancing from the south during to-night and to-morrow. Very boisterous conditions probable in the South Island. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rough to high south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, elsewhere moderate but rising. Eastern Tasman Sea: Moderate to strong west to south-west winds reaching gale force in parts of the central and southern portions. Seas rather rough to rough. Weather: Mainly fair at first but rain in western and southern portions of the South Island and gradually becoming more widespread. Some heavy falls and possibly local flooding in the far south. Temperatures moderate. The New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, report for 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Bright sunshine, 10 hours 40 minutes. Rainfall, nil. Temperatures: Maximum, 72deg. Fahr.; minimum, 47deg. Fahr. Time of sunset to-day. 7.27 p.m. Time of sunrise to-mbrrow, 5.44 a.m. Phases of the Moon for February:—Full Moon, February 4; Last Quarter, February 10; New Moon, February 19; First Quarter, February 26. ,
