FRENCH CONCESSIONS

METAL FOR MUNITIONS TO GERMANY AND JAPAN [ Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, Feb. 13. Concessions leased to Japanese and German firms to mine chromium and nickel ores in New Caledonia, a French, possession, would permit these countries to export a considerable quantity of these necessary auxiliaries for rearmament. This was stressed by Major E. Oughton, consulting engineer, who is continually employed touring the world inspecting chromium mines. In the last two years, he said, Germans had taken 50,000 tons of ores and Japan 30,000. The Japanese were also exploiting iron deposits there and last month exported 25,000 tons. “It seems strange that so much of these ores should go to Japan and Germany as things are to-day,” he said, “but France can scarcely cancel the concessions unless there is war.” IMMEDIATE RELIEF FROM PILES
