HUTT VALLEY FIRE

VALUABLE TIMBER DESTROYED. [ Per Pieijß Association.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 14. Fire swept, through several hundred acres in Stokes Valley to-night, destroying a quantity of valuable (timber and hundreds of pounds worth of fencing. The flames came within a hundred yards of a house occupied ;by Mrs. Page, but were diverted by j fire-fighters. ( The outbreak started on the main j Hutt Road in the Taita Gorge late in the afternoon and was still blazing late to-night. Sweeping from the Hutt Road across the hill into the valley the flames made a spectacular sight. I A party of 20 to 30 men fought the I blaze throughout the night. At about ! 10 o'clock there were two explosions '.when the fire reached a quantity of j gelignite and detonators stored in a ished. Telephone communication with iStokes Valley was cut off soon after •'the fire started.
