BLOCKED BY FIRE
♦ TRAFFIC ON NO. 1 LINE DASH THROUGH BLAZING TAR BARRELS Road traffic on the No. 1 Line, near the seven-mile peg, was held up for a considerable period yesterday morning by about. 50 blazing tar barrels, drivers having to lake the risk of dashing through flames and smoke io continue their way. The fire occurred where the Public Works Department is working on the road. Fanned by a strong northwesterly gale, the fire spread rapidly and a large number of barrels of tar were soon blazing furiously. Th? flames stretched right across the road, and there was also a screen of black smoke, which held up southward bound traffic, although cars coming toward Wanganui could make a detour over the “razor bacn“ to No. 2 Line. One party of motorists on the way to Wanganui made a dash through flames and smoke. There was soon a long line of cars waiting for a chance to proceed south, and many were held up on the other side of the fire, which continued to burn fiercely for two hours. Besides the barrels of tar one of the engines was destroyed, also other plant and material.
