WANGANUI CRICKET

SENIOR COMPETITION CENTURY TO L. K4UTER WIN FOR TECHNICAL OLD BOYS A brilliant 112 by L. Kauler, of United, and a third-wicket partnership of 164 between the latter and E. C. Gee, who scored 57, were the individual features of thb Wanganui Cricket Association’s senior grade matches on Saturday. The exciting feature was Technical Old Boys’ win over Marist by the narrow margin of only four runs on the first innings. Because of an extremely rough wicket, the Technical Old Boys v. Marist match produced low scoring, the respective totals being 107 and 103. However, the other Cook's Gardens wicket was in good condition, and was fully exploited by United, who declared with a first innings total of 244 for six wickets. In reply, Wanganui made 122 for three wickets, before the matches were abandoned at 5.20 through rain. Honours Board Batting L. Hauler (United), 112. C. Stewart (Wanganui), 59. E. C. WANGANUI Winning the toss, United took first use of the good wicket, but macle a disastrous start, Wood being bowled without scoring. Sewell, the other opening batsman, shared a like fate soon after, and Gee joined Hauler with two wickets down for 16. Any hopes Wanganui had entertained of a debacle were smashed by the pair, who carried the score to 180 before they were separated. Hauler left a wake of 11 fours and two sixes in compiling his 112, scoring with delightful freedom all round the wicket. Gee gave his inimitable sound display, and played a wide variety of shots. His 57 included seven boundaries and a five. Gee became Hughes' second lbw victim, and 19 runs later Kauter was caught off the same bowler. United declared with six wickets down for 244, Hook having scored 20 and McNaught 20 not out. Hughes headed the Wanganui bowling averages with four for 64. Wanganui also made a bad start to their innings, but the second wicket batsmen, Roskilly and Stewart, cari ried the score from 1 to 95. Stewart I hit 12 boundaries in making 59, and ' Roskilly gave an equally bright display in running up 35. The third wicket fell at 117. and five runs later the match was abandoned because of ain. each team therefore securing "our points. Detailed results were:— United ’■ First Innings A.. MARIST Against the deadly bowling of Guthrie, slow left-hander, and Davidson, medium pace, Marist could manage only 103 in their first strike. The first four batsmen each broke double figures, Dow topscoring with 26, but the remainder scored a combined total of only 22. Guthrie finished with an average of five for 25, capturing all his wickets on his own, while Davidson emulated the feat in taking three for 26. Technical Old Boys found the wicket as disagreeable as did Marist and just got home by four runs. Davidson topscored with 31, including six fours, and Gilmour (22 not out) was the only remaining batsman to give anything like a good account of himself. However, it fell to a tail-ender, Barnett, to prove the saviour of the side. Last man in, he shouldered the responsibility in capable style, and score 1 the necessary runs to win, just befor he was bowled.
