EGMONT RACES
Tonks Stakes Results In Dead-Heat DUNGARVAN. LADY FURST GOLDEN RIDGE’S HACK CUP “TOTE” INCREASE OVER £lO,OOO Favoured with tine weather on Saturday the Egmont Racing Cluo concluded its summer meeting under ideal conditions, some excellent racing and close linishes being provided for the large crowd. That the attendance was well in excess of last year may be gathered from the fact that the “gate” showed an increase nd far short of £2OU, and the totalisatof turnover again registered an increase. On Saturday, in spite of three fourhorse events, the machine handled £22,732 10s, against £16,909 10s last year. The total for the meeting was thus £42,465, against £32,288 twelve months ago, the increase being £lO,177, or over 30 per cent. The principal event, the Tonks Stakes, for which the club had provided a trophy to go to the o<ner of the winner, resulted in a dead-heat, Dungarvan and Lady Furst sharing the honours. Third place was tilled by Ned Cuttie, but the whole result might have been different. Homily, when making a fast run on the outside of the small field two furlongs from home, ran off the course. She first attempted td turn up the straight toward the mile and a-quai-ter start, and then, failing to negotiate the sharp turn, went straight ahead and crashed into the post and rail fence separating the course proper from the outside enclosure Homily, who was a well-backed second favourite, lost a little skin on a shoulder and her off hind leg. Hei rider. R. McTavish, escaped serious injury but strained the muscics of his back. The other trophy event, lhe Nolan Cup, was won decisively by Golden Rioge, whose form this season Iku been really good, in a very even belting race Goiden Ridge was at a good ••win” price. Dark Lagle and Bumble tilled tne minor places. Following this event the trophy was presented ig the connections of Goiden Ridge on Mrs. S. O. Tonks, wife of the president, after Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.Pfor Patea, had made a congratulatory speech. The open sprint was won by Race Call, and Lickem won the Normanoy Handicap decisively. The \\ anganuitrained War Lap won the concluding event, in which he was ridden by b T. Edwards, the Wanganui apprentice, who was earlier in the afternoon seen to advantage on Pretty Lass surprise winner of the Electric Handicap, returning a dividend on the “win” machine of close on a score. The meeting was well conducted, but, as on the first day. racing got far behind schedule, and the last race was run nearly forty minutes late. Rider Suspended.
Concluding an inquiry m«o inter Terence which occurred in the Waipapa Hack Handicap, the concluding event on the first uay. the judicial committee decided that R. B. Ireland, rider of Bumble, be suspended from riding in races for two months under Rule 289 for careless riding. Ireland was held to have interfered with Nereus <P. Burgessi, who was beaten a nose by Dark Eagle. Two Small Fields. The opening events were contested by small fields of four each. Red Sun won the Okaiawa Hurdles decisively. After trailing the field for a mile ne ran past the pacemakers. Booklaw and Ohanga, heading the latter al the last fence and going on to win by two lengths. Don Erma, the eaiiy pacemaker was three lengths behin ■ Ohanga. Race Cal! v as a lift ed than Taitoru in the wannate Handicap and won well. Amoroso made the early pace from Race Caii, Taitoru and Airing, but the favourite ran to the front i.i the straight and won by a length and a-half. laitoru was a length behind Amoroso, anti Airing, wide out, was almost in line. Tidal Gift All the Way. Mischel and Tidal Gift, best backed of the Meremere Hack Held, finished in the reverse order. Tidal Gift leading all the way. Tne Tidal filly got all the best of a straggling stare and shot out to a clear lead ahead of Deficit, Le Marquis, Mischel and Baron Bold. Tidal Girt turned lor home five lengths ahead of Deficit with a gap of two lengths back to Le Marquis, Baron Bold and Mischel. The last-namefl challenged but failed by half a length to catch Tidal Gift. Le Marquis was half a length further back, followed by Baron Bold and Deficit.
An Exciting Finish. Backers accepted a short price about Dungarvan, whereas lhe iirstday Cup favourite, Lady Furst, was comaparativeiy neglected in the Tonks Stakes. Laay Furst piloted Dungarvan and Ned Cuttie out of the straight, with Chat and Homily (outride) next. The order was not changed along the back, but Dungarvan had moved up to the leader three furlongs from home, just before •Homily ran off. In a great tussle up the straight Dungarvan headed Lady Furst, but the latter came again ana got up to make a dead-heat of the finish. Ned Cuttie was two lengths away, third, clear of Chat and Rustem.
Long-priced Winnier. Footloose and Judgment, favour- | ites for the Electric Handicap, were | downed by Pretty Lass, a long-priced. ■ outsider, who had won the Novice j Stakes at the Feilding spring meet-r ing. Judgment, Lady Boden, Fiancee, Footloose and Pretty Lass was the ‘ early order, but Judgment and Fool-1 loose were disputing the issue half a| furlong from home when Pretty Lass ( i swept down on them to win by three- ■ quarters of a lengtj. A similar margin ]
[separated Footloose and Judgment, [with Fiancee and Gold Card next. Nolan Hack Cup Race In a pool ot over £lOOO Nereus, Namara. Eastern Heir, Golden Ridge and Dark Eagle were all at good prices for the Nolan Hack Cup. St. Cedric led Bumble. Eastern Heir, Golden Ridge and Namara out of the straight and along the back. but Bumble ran to the front at the halfmile, where Dark Eagle commenced to make up his leeway. Once the ficlci was well in the straight Golden Ridge came away to win by a length and ahalf. Dark Eagle was second, a neck . in front of Bumble, who beat Nereus !by a head for third place. Amatory j and Sudan were right up behind the I placed division. A Useful Three-Year-Old. 1 Lickem. who carried nearly as much as Red Sand in the hour-horse Held for the Normanby Handicap, led all the way from barrier-rise. He was two lengths ahead of Alyth along the back, with Red Sand four lengths away and Entail last. Alyth ran up to Lickem at the half-mile, but onlyon sufferance, and the Lackham gelding ran home a winner by a length 1 and .a-half. Red Sand beat Entail by a nose for second place. Disturbed led Wynardo and the fnaha Hack Handicap favourite. War Lap, over the early stages, but Wynardo took the lead at the live furlongs. He was joined by War Lap on the home turn, with Silver Gift. Glenthawn and Golden Orchid next. War Lap ran to the front at the distance and won easily by two lengths, 1 with Golden Orchid a similar distance ahead ot Silver Gift. Wynardo was 1 fourth.
