DEATH OF INCOME
WANGANUI CUP WINNER WELL-KNOWN TARANAKI HORSE The death occurred on Thursday of the former well-known Taranaki galloper Income at the advanced age of 22 years. Since his retirement from the race-track, Income had been grazing on the property adjoining the Otakeho Hotel. Bred by Mr. H, J. Eaves, Income was a son of Guianforte and Pommery, and made his debut in the spring of 1919. During his career, which concluded in 1927 he won stakes amounting, to £13,095, securing 25 wins, 10 seconds and 13 thirds from a total of 123 starts. His record is as follows: Stakes Won £ 1919- races 805 1920- —22 races - 1375 1921- races 3050 1922- races 3600 1923- races 1320 1924- 8 races - 550 1925- -17 races - 2395 1926- -13 races Total: 123 races . ......... £13,095 Purchased by Mr. E. J. Andrews in 1921. Income was then among the first flight of middle-distance performers in the Dominion, the Autumn Handicap at Ellerslie being among his victories. However, it was during the 1922-23 season that Income rose to greater heights, especially at Ellerslie, where he notched the Mitcheison Cup and Summer Cup. This was his best season, winning £3600 in stakes. Other important successes included the Wellington Parliamentary Handicap, Taranaki Flying Handicap, Taranaki Farewell Handicap, Avondale Handicap, Stratford Malone Handicap, Wanganui Cup and Wanganui Earle Stakes.
Income was trained at Hawera by W. Pine while racing in the colours of his breeder, but after his purchase by Mr. Andrews he was transferred to P. Johnson's care at New Plymouth.
