USED FOR ILLEGAL BETTING DEPARTMENTAL ACTION IN PALMERSTON NORTH [ Per Pi ess Association.] PALMERSTON N., Feb. 9. On December 9 there was some exicitement in Palmerston North when ■it was made known that telephones operated for purposes of illegal betting would be cut off. The Post and Telegraph Department, however, went no further with the threat issued at [that time and many people forgot about it. This morning, however, ifurther to the letter of December 8, ithe department issued advice that certain telephones would be cut off at 5 ■p.m. to-morrow. It is not known whether the depart‘ment is taking similar action in other parts of the Dominion but it is understood that it applied to 25 telephones in Palmerston North, representing an Annual revenue of between £4OOO and £5OOO to the department.
