Curb on Tent Colonies Sought

MANCHESTER—LocaI authorities in many parts of England are making a big drive against week-end tent and bungalow colonics which do not conform with the requirements of the Public Health Act, .1938. During recent years “canvas cities” have sprung up almost overnight in picturesque rural and urban areas and owing to their limited powers local authorities have been at a loss to regulate their growth. At one camping ground a few miles beyond the Manchester boundary scores of wooden bungalows were erected by tenants who did not even submit plans for the approval of the rural authority. Now steps have been taken to condemn and demolish buildings of this kind which lack such things as sanitation and pure water supplies. The law is to be enforced which provides that design and materials used in the construction of week-end bungalows must conform to the standards of the local authority. Local authorities also are empowered to license suitable camping sites.
